Everton's Andre Gomes explains reason behind new squad number as Fabian Delph inherits a special digit

Everton have unveiled the squad numbers for new signings Fabian Delph and Andre Gomes.

Delph, who arrived from Manchester City on Monday evening for an initial £8.5million, will wear the No.8 shirt.

Meanwhile, former Barcelona midfielder Gomes, who donned the eight for the Blues during his impressive loan spell, will now rep the No.21.

Many fans are shocked that the Portuguese international, who completed his move to Goodison Park will not be wearing the number he occupied last term.

But speaking to Everton's official website the 25-year-old explained: "The number 21 is a special number for me.

"When I left Benfica, I wore it at Valencia and that was my first experience outside of Portugal. That was a big change for me and everyone in my family knows that personal meaning.

"I also had the same number at Barcelona, so over a total of four years at two different clubs.

"I really like the number, I wanted to keep the number and I’m now looking forward to having it on the back of my Everton shirt."
