Everton have been dealt a second injury blow in two days after Dominic Calvert-Lewin suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a quadriceps problem.

The club said the striker would “remain out for a number of weeks”. On Tuesday it emerged that the in-form midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré had broken a foot.

Calvert-Lewin has been out for two months, last playing against Brighton on 28 August. His fellow striker Richarlison may have a chance of featuring against Watford on Saturday as he recovers from a knee injury.

Doucouré has been in excellent form for Rafael Benítez’s team this season but faces an extended spell on the sidelines with a fractured metatarsal. The 28-year-old, who has scored twice in the Premier League this term and produced four assists – only Paul Pogba has more – missed part of last season with a similar problem. Everton have said he will not need an operation.

Benítez remains without the midfield alternatives André Gomes and Fabian Delph owing to injury.
