Everton's £1million transfer windfall for player who was sold three-and-a-half years ago

Everton are set to benefit from a £1million transfer clause - negotiated by shrewd Blues bosses three-and-a-half years ago!

When Steven Naismith was sold to Norwich City in January 2016, for a fee in the region of £8m, Everton banked a huge mark up on a player they signed from Glasgow Rangers on a free transfer.

But there is even more to come.

Canny Goodison chairman Bill Kenwright negotiated that deal and insisted on inserting a clause which meant the Blues would receive a further £1m windfall should Norwich City return to the Premier League.

The Canaries duly invoked that clause when they were promoted earlier this month, even though Naismith hasn't kicked a ball for them since August 2017!

So Everton will effectively bank £9m for a player who made 123 appearances for them and cost nothing.

Naismith joined Hearts on a two-season loan in January 2018 and enjoyed a successful 2018/19 season, scoring 16 goals in 31 appearances for club and country.

The Scottish international proved one of David Moyes' most astute captures.

He made 123 appearances for the Blues (67 starts) scoring 25 goals, including a perfect hat-trick against Chelsea and one in a Merseyside derby.

He was allowed to leave Goodison in January 2016, in the same transfer window that Oumar Niasse arrived for £13.5m.
