Everton record for youngest ever player may be broken in FA Cup clash

Thierry Small could become the youngest player to ever play for Everton tonight if he comes off the bench against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup.

It is yet to be verified but left-back Small, who only turned 16 in August, could break the record held by Jose Baxter, who made his Blues bow aged 16 years and 191 days.

It has been suggested that Small would beat that record by 15 days.

Midfielder Tyler Onyango, 17, is also set to be part of the Everton squad this evening for the fourth round tie.

Small’s progress at Goodison continues to come at pace with his promotion from the under-18s set-up to David Unsworth’s u-23s only taking place at the beginning of the season.

Small has since trained with the first-team, as has Onyango, and Everton are keen to tie him down to a first professional contract with talks understood to be on-going.

The defender can only sign a pro deal when he turns 17.

Onyango, meanwhile, is a highly-regarded midfielder who has emerged as a key part in the u-23s set-up and is being primed for a bright future at Goodison.
