Everton player ratings - Young Blues assessed as Toffees suffer Mainz defeat in Opel Cup

Lossl

Exposed for Mainz's opening goal and beaten, at full-stretch, for their second and third goals. Not at fault for any.

Coleman

His half an hour cameo was largely positive as he once again linked up with Broadhead well. Saw a fizzing shot go just over the bar.

Holgate

Vocal as the senior centre-back and did decently during his 30 minutes on the pitch – but was part of a defence caught out by a long ball over the top for the opening goal.

Gibson

Confident performance and a first goal at first-team level reduced the deficit mid-way through the second-half.

Still learning his trade but making great strides for a teenager in this environment.

Digne

The left-back worked hard to complete 90 minutes of competitive action for the day.

Davies

Full of energy and asked to change positions on a couple of occasions as Silva tweaked formation mid-half. Finished the game as one of the senior outfield players

Schneiderlin

Silva will have hoped the Frenchman would have exerted more influence on a game of this type.

McCarthy

Struggled to get into the swing of things during his half an hour on the pitch. Even his usual work-rate seemed below usual standards. Expected to leave the club before the window shuts.

Mirallas

As with all his performances this summer, the Belgian has worked hard but done nothing to force Silva into a re-think. Played in a more familiar attacking wide role today.

Walcott

Deployed upfront – a position he favours – and found himself in a couple of decent positions but hesitated and failed to pull the trigger when the chance came his way.

Broadhead

One of the summer's success stories, worked tirelessly again even and linked up well with Coleman in the first-half.

Subs

Connolly (on for Coleman '31)

Typically honest performance from the dependable Connolly although a permanent move away from Goodison seems like the best solution.

Pennington (on for Holgate '31)

A solid 30 minutes for the centre-half who needs a permanent move to kick-start his career.

Foulds (on for Digne '31)

Did his job at left-back well, hardly putting a foot wrong.

Adeniran (on for McCarthy '31)

You can see his raw potential and how a loan move this season would help him begin to realise it.

Gordon (on for Walcott '31)

Given the thankless task of playing upfront by himself, the teenager diligently ran the channels and worked hard. An exciting talent who deserved the first-team opportunity this pre-season.

Hornby (on for Schneiderlin '54)

Had little time to make an impact in his brief run-out.
