Everton player ratings vs Southampton as five struggle in defeat

Jordan Pickford 6

Made good saves from Romeu and Vestergaard in either half but could do little about the goals

Ben Godfrey 5

Had a tough old afternoon with Nathan Redmond playing so well.

Michael Keane 6

Much like the rest of the defence around him, was not as assured as we've come to expect but kept going

Yerry Mina 6

Dragged out of position for Southampton's second but not alone in making errors here.

Lucas Digne 5

Had failed to hit his usually sky-high standards before his afternoon got worse when he was sent off. The left-back protested but Kevin Friend showed his a straight red

Allan 6

Worked hard to sniff out the danger but, other than Doucoure, he was fighting this battle without much help.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 7

Was Everton's best player in the first-half. Covered a lot of ground, pressing well and passing intelligence. Only given less than 15 minutes of the second period, however, as Ancelotti went in search of a way back in.

Gylfi Sigurdsson 5

Hit the bar with a strike from the edge of the area but his defensive shortcomings hurt when Southampton cranked up the pressure. Looked frustrated. Subbed before the hour.

James Rodriguez 6

Some flashes of his trademark quality in the first-half but his influence on the game was nowhere near at the level Everton would have hoped. Finished the game holding his left hamstring. Worrying.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 5

Having few touches in games is not unusual for Calvert-Lewin but he also expects some form of service. He didn't get that today

Alex Iwobi 6

Had looked a threat early on but that faded as Everton began to lose a grip on proceedings. Had he continued on that trajectory – and stayed on the pitch - then he would've scored lower but he was taken off at half-time.

Subs

Bernard (on for Iwobi '46) 5

Saw plenty of the ball, and can't be faulted for intent, but didn't make much of a difference.

Delph (on for Doucoure '58) 7

Helped Everton keep hold of the ball much better than they had been doing.

Gordon (on for Sigurdsson '58) 6

Gave the forward line a direct runner but didn't see enough of the ball, sadly.
