Everton player ratings as Jordan Pickford and Demarai Gray brilliant while three other impress vs Man City

Jordan Pickford 9

Couldn’t do anything about City’s goal but after being kept busy all afternoon, keeping out a string of dangerous balls into the box, England’s number one pulled off a huge save late on to get down to his left and keep out a shot from Riyad Mahrez and also denied De Bruyne.

Nathan Patterson 6

Challenging afternoon for the young right-back as he had to deal with the twin threats of Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish and although he remained focused on his task, he was booked for a shove on the latter and made way for Seamus Coleman with 20 minutes to go.

Vitalii Mykolenko 6

Turned inside out by Riyad Mahrez in the build-up for City’s goal, he fell victim to the Algerian international’s twinkling toes and later found himself on the receiving end of a horror challenge from Erling Haaland that perhaps deserved more than a yellow card.

AS IT HAPPENED: Man City 1-1 Everton highlights and reaction

James Tarkowski 8

Some timely interceptions from the native Mancunian, like Mykolenko he couldn’t get close enough to Mahrez for the goal though and found himself in the book for protesting Haaland’s challenge on Mykolenko.

Conor Coady 8

Restored to the starting line-up after being ineligible against parent club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day, he was largely unflustered as the spare man among three centre-backs although he couldn’t keep out Haaland’s shot when on the goal-line.

Ben Godfrey 7

Brought in on the right hand side of a central defensive trio, he flattened Haaland with a challenge just 30 seconds into the contest but was left in the Norwegian’s wake for the goal although his lung-busting run up the right wing late on was a joy to behold.

Idrissa Gueye 7

Industrious performance from the veteran midfielder who was kept busy putting out fires for three quarters of the game before making way.

Amadou Onana 8

Found himself walking a disciplinary tightrope after being booked for a foul on Rodri, the youngster nevertheless kept his nerve to make some crucial challenges.

Alex Iwobi 7

Hard-working display in the engine room, he was full of running on a day when Everton needed his energy levels.

Demarai Gray 9

Spectacular equaliser with a curling shot from the edge of the area, he could even afford to stumble before picking his spot.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 6

Encouraging to see Everton’s main striker back in the starting line-up and although largely isolated, he worked hard for 70 minutes.

Neal Maupay (on 70 for Calvert-Lewin) 7

Took the fight to City’s defenders late on and was booked at the end for a foul on Nathan Ake.

Seamus Coleman (on 70 for Patterson) 7

Disciplined cameo as Everton stood firm and made a crucial last-gasp challenge on Phil Foden.

Tom Davies (on 78 for Gueye)

Fresh legs as the visitors clung on.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (on 90 for Godfrey)
