Everton player linked to Bristol City set to join Championship rivals

A player previously linked with Bristol City is set to move to a different Championship side.

The Robins held an interest in Everton's Joe Williams in January, with the midfielder impressing during a season-long loan at Bolton Wanderers.

Yet a move for the 22-year-old never materialised, with the Robins concerned over an injury the player had picked up.

It kept Williams out for around a month and, with City involved in a play-off chase, they were keen to sign players who were ready and fit for the first-team immediately.

There had been speculation that the Robins would renew their interest in Williams this summer, but it appears that they had moved on to other targets.

Tommy Rowe from Doncaster Rovers was instead added into the midfield, and it now looks like Williams is set to join Wigan Athletic.

Wigan have agreed a fee with Everton for the player following a breakthrough in talks and the Liverpool Echo report that the deal could go through today.

Williams has one year left on his Goodison Park contract and is surplus to requirements at the Toffees.

The Robins appear to have quite a close relationship with Everton, with Toffees academy coach Phil Jevons having previously played for City between 2006 and 2008, alongside current Ashton Gate boss Lee Johnson.

City have previously bought Liam Walsh from Goodison Park, whilst they were also linked with left-back Antonee Robinson at the start of the summer.

Like Williams, Robinson also ended up at Wigan.
