Everton penalty incident shows two things about Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson

The Everton penalty incident against Chelsea on Saturday - described as a 'misunderstanding' by Carlo Ancelotti - showed the desire of Richarlison and the character of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

That is according to the latest episode of the Royal Blue Podcast, with host Sam Carroll joined by ECHO head of sport Dave Prentice and Goodison Park season-ticket holder Paul Wheelock.

Ancelotti has confirmed Sigurdsson was his nominated penalty taker against Chelsea but Richarlison appeared to confront his captain before the kick was taken.

Sigurdsson would net from the spot - and secure all three points for Everton - and Wheelock believes the incident showed how much Richarlison wanted to score after bagging just once in the Premier League this season.

Wheelock said: "He's had one of those seasons in front of goal.

"You look back on Saturday and Richarlison should score two of his three chances. You can see [not scoring freely] is clearly playing on his mind.

"I love the fact he plays on the edge but hopefully Carlo Ancelotti had a word with him [after the game].

"You shouldn't be going up to Gylfi Sigurdsson like that, and almost confronting him before he takes a penalty, but it shows his desire to get a goal.

"We're just such a poorer team without him. He is such a threat and his work-rate is there as well, but there are parts of his game he has to change.

"His tackle on Thiago in the derby, it cost him and it cost the team. There's nothing wrong with playing on the edge, and he's only young, but hopefully a few years playing under Carlo Ancelotti will smooth the rough edges."

Prentice added: "I also think the incident showed the strength of character of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

"He was the skipper on the day, and not everybody agrees with that, but other players could quite easily have absolved that responsibility.

"Sigurdsson has missed penalties for Everton but he was like, 'No, it's my job, I'm having it'. I was really pleased with that."
