Everton pair were sorting squad donation to NHS before league campaign launched

Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines were already organising for the Everton squad to donate money to the NHS when the idea of a league-wide players' campaign was suggested.

The Blues' captain and vice-captain were in discussions about Carlo Ancelotti's squad all contributing money to help those on the frontline in the fight against the coronavirus.

But as they were working on the donation, discussions started on what would become the #PlayersTogether campaign, which includes players from all top-flight clubs giving money to the NHS.

Coleman began talking with Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and last week the fund was officially launched.

The Everton skipper said: "When all this got really serious, you know the coronavirus in England, players wanted to help.

"I'd spoke to Bainsey and Bainsey spoke to me and we thought it would be a good idea among the players to get a donation to the NHS who need it at this time.

"As we were doing that, Jordan got in touch and said they were looking to get a fund together on behalf of all Premier League teams.

"And we just thought collectively if we could all raise a lot of money then it probably would be better.

"So we decided to go down that route and thankfully all teams are on board with it.

"I think it is for a great cause and we wanted to help in any way we could."
