Everton odds for Champions League spot tumble after strong start to Premier League season

Everton's odds of qualifying for the Champions League this season have been reduced to just 5/1 after their promising start to the new campaign under Carlo Ancelotti.

Before a ball was kicked, Everton's chances of making the top four were rated at 16/1, but it seems the form of James Rodriguez, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and co has forced a rethink, with the Football Pools having cut their price.

Fellow European spot contenders Manchester United, who were given an extra week off from Premier League action after their Europa League exertions at the end of last season, have three points from their first couple of games.

Tottenham, meanwhile, who Everton defeated away from home on the first day of the season, beat Southampton last weekend and face Newcastle United today.

Their North London rivals Arsenal travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Monday night.

But with no European football to contend with in this truncated Premier League season, Everton do have a significant advantage over their rivals who are also in the chase.

Manager Ancelotti made changes to his team in the Carabao Cup as he sought to prioritise the league, and that has so far paid off for the Italian.

Everton face West Ham United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before facing Brighton at Goodison Park next weekend.

After the international break comes the first Merseyside derby of the season against Liverpool, also at Goodison.
