Everton new-boy Alexi Iwobi explains Marco Silva's tactical instructions ahead of debut

Alex Iwobi has revealed Marco Silva gave him free rein in order to try and get Everton back into .

The deadline day signing made his Blues debut at Villa Park on Friday night as a second-half substitute.

Everton were chasing an equaliser after Wesley broke the deadlock midway through the opening period.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin squandered a great chance to level before the break but shot straight at Villa defender Bjorn Engels.

And with the Blues struggling to carve out any further opportunities, Silva introduced Iwobi and Moise Kean just past the hour mark.

The pair improved Everton, Iwobi would hit the post and Kean looked set for an assist but Theo Walcott volleyed his cross over the bar from close range.

Silva tweaked the team's formation into a 4-4-2 but, as Iwobi explains, he was not under strict instructions to stay in one position.

"I was actually meant to be on the left but, the manager said, because we were playing 4-4-2 we had to be compact," Iwobi said.

"So he said 'if you feel you should be out wide, go out wide and if you feel you need to be inside, come inside'.  So he basically told me to go where I felt comfortable and I was able to do that.

He added: "At the end of the day he wanted me to go and get a goal for us to get us back in it.  That's what I tried to do but unfortunately it didn't happen today.

"Until the second goal we all thought there was a chance, we kept on creating chances and kept on looking promising but it is just one of those days and if we had played another 90 it wasn't going to go in."

"I thought I did ok and created chances for my team but it was not the debut I was after but we have to move on from this," Iwobi went onto add.

Iwobi would replace Gylfi Sigurdsson on Friday night and the £28m man says he can play as a No10, as well as on the left.

"I've grown up playing in the attacking position just behind the striker but wherever I'm told to play - even if it's right-back - I will try and do my best for the team," he said.

"I played on the left today and played most of my life there so I was comfortable."
