Everton new boy Alex Iwobi backed to become a fans favourite by former Blues defender

Former Everton defender Joleon Lescott has backed new boy Alex Iwobi to become a fans favourite at Goodison Park.

Iwobi joined the Blues on deadline day from Arsenal in a deal believed to be worth around £28million, with the Nigeria international penning a five-year deal.

But despite being yet to feature for the Blues, Iwobi has saw his side claim four points from their opening two Premier League games, with Marco Silva's side having the chance to go top of the division should they overcome Aston Villa at Villa Park tonight.

The 23-year-old was one of seven new recruits secured by Silva and Marcel Brands this summer, and Lescott, who left the Blues for Manchester City in 2009, has been left more than impressed with the summer transfer business the Goodison Park club conducted.

“I’m excited for Everton this season, I think they’ve spent well in areas that they needed to,” Lescott told The Debate on Sky Sports.

"I’m thinking they are the next team to break into the top tier, possibly this season. I’m a big fan of Iwobi. I’m surprised Arsenal let him go.

“Iwobi seems to play with good energy and desire that fans want to see regardless. He seems to be running at his maximum every time he gets the ball, which will only hold him as a fans’ favourite at Everton.”
