Everton morning headlines as Mason Holgate reveals Man Utd trial and Barcelona defender linked

Here are your Everton morning headlines for Tuesday, April 28.

Holgate discusses United trial

Mason Holgate had a trial at Manchester United before joining Everton in 2015.

The defender has enjoyed an impressive season, becoming a regular starter under Carlo Ancelotti.

Still only 23, Holgate is already into his fifth campaign at Goodison Park. It could all have been very different, though, as the then-teenager had a trial at United before his move to Everton came about.

"Yeah I went [to Man United] for a week, then I got injured and went back to Barnsley. It was in pre-season, the first team was away and I was just with the under-23s,” he said in an Instagram Live interview on New Era Global Sport’s page.

"At the time, I wanted to go somewhere and feel like part of a first team. I felt like if I tried to go to one of the bigger clubs I would have been back into an under-23s setup, which isn't what I wanted.

"I'd just played 20 games in League One at 18 years old, which obviously as a defender is good. So I felt like it would have been a step backwards to go to 23s football.

"I wanted to feel like I was going into - not starting every week - but being in a first team setup."

Government issues football update

The UK government says it aims to get football back up and running “as soon as possible”.

The Premier League and Football League have been on hold since the middle of March, and no solution for the resumption of the season has yet been found.

Recent reports suggest that the football authorities are targeting a return in June.

And Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Oliver Dowden says he is keen to see the game restart.

"I personally have been in talks with the Premier League with a view to getting football up and running as soon as possible in order to support the whole football community,” he told the House of Commons.

Everton are 12th in the table - but just four points adrift of eighth - with nine matches left to play.

Everton linked with Todibo

Everton have reportedly held discussions with Barcelona over the potential transfer of Jean-Clair Todibo.

Carlo Ancelotti is keen to bolster his defensive options ahead of next season, and Tobido is said to have been a target in January.

According to the Daily Mail , Everton are looking into a £17.4m deal this summer.

Todibo has spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan at Schalke, making seven appearances in all competitions.

The Bundesliga side have an option to make his move permanent for £21m, but they are currently considering alternatives.

That could leave the path clear for Everton to swoop. The report claims the Blues have made their interest known to Barcelona, for whom Todibo has played four times.
