Everton morning headlines as Ivan Perisic linked with Blues, Calvert-Lewin decision explained

Here are your Everton morning headlines for Sunday, 20 September.

Ancelotti full of praise for new signing Rodriguez

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti described the performance of man-of-the-match James Rodriguez as “uncomplicated”.

The Blues made it two wins from two in the Premier League with a 5-2 thrashing of West Bromwich Albion at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Colombian international Rodriguez, who joined the club from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, marked his home debut with an arrowed finish to put Everton in front and also provided the corner from which Dominic Calvert-Lewin completed his hat-trick.

“He makes football easy,” Ancelotti said .

“He has started really well and I am happy with him. He still has a fantastic desire to play and loves to play with us.

“The quality of James makes it easy for him to play [in any league]. His football is not complicated.”

Croatian international linked with Everton move

Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic is a target for Everton, according to reports.

Sport Lens cites Fussball Transfers as claiming the Blues, as well as Leicester City, have made contact regarding the Croatia international.

Perisic spent the 2019/2020 season on loan at Bayern Munich, where he helped them win the treble.

The 31-year-old is a direct and strong winger who can play on either flank, and would give Ancelotti additional options in attack.

Calvert-Lewin’s ‘offside’ goal decision explained

The decision of the video assistant referee to overturn an offside call and award Everton’s crucial equaliser against West Brom has been explained.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin back-heeled the ball home in the 31st minute after it dropped a yard from goal to bring the Blues level.

The Everton striker was initially flagged as being in an offside position by the assistant referee, but the incident was placed under review by VAR, Simon Hooper.

Official Mike Dean was informed that Calvert-Lewin’s goal should be allowed to stand because the ball fell to him, not from an assist from Richarlison, but from a West Brom defender.

A statement from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said :”The on-field decision was offside, but the VAR advised the referee that West Brom’s Darnell Furlong played the ball into Calvert-Lewin’s path.

“The Referee Review Area was not used by the referee as this was a factual decision.”
