Everton morning headlines as Carlo Ancelotti talks transfers and fans given potential Goodison return date

Here are the Everton morning headlines for Wednesday, July 29.

Transfer talks

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti is in daily talks with the club’s recruitment staff over transfers, but a key meeting has been set for next week.

The Italian is in regular contact with Director of Football Marcel Brands, while he is also holding Zoom conferences with the Everton board every day.

However, as revealed by the Echo, Ancelotti  will have a face-to-face transfer summit meeting with board members next week.

The club are likely to target the additions of a centre-back, a central-midfielder and right-winger this summer, while both full-back positions will also be looked at.

Leighton Baines has moved on and a replacement is probably required, while the futures of Djibril Sidibe and Jonjoe Kenny are also in doubt.

October hope

It had been hoped that fans could return to Premier League stadiums for the start of the 2020/21 season on September 12, but this has now been pushed back.

Goodison Park will not welcome back Everton fans until at least October 1, meaning they will have to continue watching from home until then.

“The October 1 deadline is certainly the target that we’re looking at,” Sports Minister Simon Huddleston said.

“If you look at various announcements we’ve made, some have been put forward, some have been pushed back, but that’s a pretty firm one.

“In the whole scheme of things, it’s not that far away - 60-something days and we’ll be there - so I would be surprised if that date was moved.”

Under-23s update

Everton's under-23s are set to return to training this week with the aim of starting their season when the first-team kick-off their new campaign on September 12.

The Premier League 2 season was cancelled in May and has not been played since March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As revealed by the Echo, the new season is set to get underway on September 12, and there are talks about a possible restructuring of the league.

Everton were seventh in the Premier League 2 table when the season was halted.
