Everton missed out on Man United defender after 'fight between the owners'

Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has revealed how a 'fight' between his old club and Everton prevented him from moving to Goodison Park.

Then Everton manager Marco Silva was keen on landing the Argentine international, only for United to insist on a permanent deal, ensuring a deal didn't materialise last month before the start of the Premier League season.

The Argentine defender made a total of 122 appearances for United after signing from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 for £16million. However, he struggled with injuries and spent his last season with the Old Trafford club on loan at Estudiantes.

And now Rojo, who currently plays for Boca Juniors in Argentina, has revealed all about how he had already said his goodbyes to his United teammates and was preparing to become an Everton player, when he was made aware of the two boards at the respective clubs being at 'loggerheads'.

"I was about to leave for Everton; I had said goodbye to my teammates; I grabbed my boots and everything," he told Libero.

"I waved to everyone because I was leaving, but there was a fight between the owners of Everton and Manchester.

"They were at loggerheads and wouldn’t let me go; the next day I had to go back to training with all the stuff."
