Everton lineups vs Preston as midfield prepare for major shakeup

Everton play their final friendly fixture before the new campaign gets underway in earnest next weekend.

The Blues take on Preston North End at Goodison Park as Carlo Ancelotti looks to get his team ready for a new campaign.

He'll be without a number of senior players who are away on international duty but some youngsters could take the chance to impress, and our writers have picked their line ups for the game below:

Midfield ready for shakeup

Peter Harris: We could see a very different midfield trio today than the one who will eventually play Tottenham on the first day of the new season.

With Allan now confirmed an Everton player, one of the men in the middle this afternoon is bound to make way.

If James Rodriguez and Doucoure are also brought in, all of them could be replaced in the starting lineup in a major shakeup by Carlo Ancelotti.

There's no better time for them to fight for their place than against Preston. They might not get another chance.

My team (4-4-2) Tryer; Kenny, Holgate, Branthwaite, Nkounkou; Delph, Sigurdsson, Gordon, Iwobi; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin

Too soon for new recruits

Chris Beesley: Everton’s final pre-season friendly looks to have come too soon for their new recruits but given that Carlo Ancelotti has only got his side on to a pitch for any kind of proper match so far in preparation for the new campaign – the midweek trip to Blackburn Rovers was called off – the Blues boss will be grateful to get his players some game time.

This week’s internationals have decimated Everton’s line-up so you’d expect it to be all-change by the time they travel to Tottenham Hotspur for their Premier League opener.

In the meantime, here’s a very different-looking Blues line-up than normal.

My team (4-4-2) Tyrer; Kenny, Nkounkou, Holgate, Branthwaite; Delph, Sigurdsson, Walcott, Gordon; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin.

Who should lineup vs Preston? Let us know in the comments below.

Reliable partnership up front

Mark Wakefield: Plenty of excitement has swirled around Goodison in recent days, and rightly so with new signings on the cards.

But the Blues have a game to play today, as they take on Preston North End in their final pre-season friendly of the summer.

Ancelotti will be without some key players who are away on international duty, with the likes of Jordan Pickford, Seamus Coleman, Lucas Digne, Michael Keane, Andre Gomes and Tom Davies all away from Finch Farm.

Jonas Lossl is also away with Denmark, which could give young goalkeeper Harry Tyrer a start at Goodison.

Into defence and we could see a full-back pairing of Jonjoe Kenny and summer signing Niels Nkounkou, while Yerry Mina has recently returned from injury and could partner Mason Holgate at centre-back.

Midfield presents Ancelotti with the option of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fabian Delph, while Alex Iwboi and Anthony Gordon may be useful options on the wings.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison may look to continue their reliable partnership up front this afternoon

My team: (4-4-2) Tyrer; Kenny, Mina, Holgate, Nkounkou; Iwobi, Delph, Sigurdsson, Gordon; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin
