Everton line-ups vs Wolves as Josh King handed debut and Mason Holgate decision made

For the first time in more than five months a real roaring crowd will cheer out the names on the Everton team sheet as they are read out tonight.

Hopefully.

But which names will they be cheering?

Carlo Ancelotti confirmed yesterday that Yerry Mina and Josh King were fit again - but will they start?

And who will carry the can, if any, for Sunday's unacceptable showing?

We asked our team of writers who they would select for the visit of Wolves to Goodison Park, a match which isn't quite as must-win as it might otherwise have been.

Here's what they said. Josh King can read on enthusiastically but Mason Holgate may wish to avert his eyes immediately.

No need for Holgate AND Coleman

Phil Kirkbride

My team (4-3-3): Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Godfrey, Digne, Doucoure, Allan, Davies, Rodriguez, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison

Everton have to win to keep any lingering hopes of European qualification alive so need to revert to the 4-3-3 formation which had served them well earlier in the season.

There is no need for Ancelotti to play Mason Holgate and Seamus Coleman down the right hand side at Goodison this evening, as 6,500 fans return.

Coleman should slot back into right-back and ahead of him, in a midfield three, he should have Abdoulaye Doucoure who will allow James Rodriguez free reign to do as he pleases.

Tom Davies should be the third man in midfield and his return to the side can add much needed energy and commitment.

Time to crown King - finally

Chris Beesley

My team (4-3-3): Pickford; Godfrey, Digne, Mina, Keane; Allan, Doucoure, James; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin, King

Everton’s disgusting display in their home defeat against the Premier League’s rock bottom club Sheffield United, who were relegated several weeks ago, should have players and coaching staff alike asking themselves serious questions about what went wrong.

In what Michael Keane had admitted was the first of two “must-win” fixtures at Goodison Park this week to avoid the season being branded a disappointment due to a failure to qualify for Europe, the Blues produced a display as flat and uninspiring as any of their far too numerous home woes throughout this frustrating campaign.

With a stellar figure like Carlo Ancelotti at the helm who you hope can remain for many years to give Everton the stability and direction they badly need, you’d have hoped they could at least secure a place in the new UEFA Europa Conference League.

A manager who has a hat-trick of Champions League triumphs on his glittering CV might even have gone on to take them all the way in the competition to end the longest trophy drought in the club’s history.

But instead of looking up and aiming for continental competition, European hopes are fading fast and they’re left looking over their shoulders at the likes of Leeds United, who have now leapfrogged them on goal difference, and Arsenal.

I could be churlish here and demand 10 outfield changes as nobody other than goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could realistically say they performed to their maximum against a Blades side who to a man were supposedly inferior to them but realistically that can’t be done.

Starting with five defenders at home to comfortably the worst team in the division this season seemed overly-cautious though so with the fans back at Goodison, I’d like to see a bolder selection, even though it could all now be too little, too late.

Andre Gomes to offer a more attacking option

David Prentice

My team (4-3-3): Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Godfrey, Digne; Allan, Doucoure, Gomes; James, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison

Yerry Mina may be fit, but neither of the centre-backs deserve to be left out, and Seamus Coleman's penetration down the right is more necessary than playing Ben Godfrey out of position there.

The front three should speak for itself - provided James has recovered from his first significant run-out for a month - which leaves the one midfield slot alongside Allan and Doucoure.

Andre Gomes showed enough in flashes at Aston Villa when he came on to suggest he'll offer the more attacking option than Tom Davies.

Davies has to start

Connor O'Neill

My team (4-3-3): Pickford; Godfrey, Keane, Mina, Digne; Allan, Davies, Doucoure; James, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison

Tom Davies has to start

After Sunday’s embarrassing defeat to Sheffield United, it is safe to say that Carlo Ancelotti has another selection headache this evening.

How do you want to see Everton line up? Have your say in the comments.

Jordan Pickford will no doubt start in goal, while Ben Godfrey, Michael Keane,Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne should all make up the back four.

While in midfield, Tom Davies should come back in and be partnered by Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan.

Out wide, James Rodriguez should start on the right, with Richarlison on the left, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin should once again lead the line.

Give James licence to roam

Sam Carroll

My team (4-3-3): Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Godfrey, Digne; Allan, Doucoure, Rodriguez; King, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison

It all comes down to this.

Well, kind of. Because there isn’t actually much resting on this game after the embarrassing defeat to Sheffield United.

Except the instant opinion of 6,500 supporters of course.

Carlo Ancelotti has to name an attacking line-up that does justice to the returning fans.

Josh King is finally given a start as James Rodriguez has licence to roam at the head of a midfield three.
