Everton legend Tim Cahill offers interesting solution to improve VAR in the Premier League

Former Everton legend Tim Cahill has suggested that an ex-professional footballer should be part of the VAR set-up to help make key decisions.

The Toffees were denied a penalty after Dele Alli appeared to handle the ball in the penalty area.

Anthony Taylor, who was the VAR referee at Stockley Park, took over three minutes to reach a verdict on whether Yerry Mina's header had struck Alli's hand after Martin Atkinson had originally waved away the claims.

With the score at 1-0 to Tottenham thanks to Alli's opener, this was a huge turning point in the match and could have offered Everton the chance to level with plenty of time left for a winner.

However, Cahill has joked that he didn't know what was happening whilst the VAR check was going on, summing up the emotions of many frustrated football fans.

Fan Reaction to Gomes injury

The former Australia forward even suggested that an ex-professional footballer should be part of the VAR team at Stockley Park to add context behind key moments on the field.

"I'm the wrong man to ask because tonight is just a night of VAR, we checked everything," Cahill told Sky Sports after the match.

"We were making a joke whilst the game was going on, we didn't know if we were coming or going.

"They need to explain the situation. Has it hit arm? Is it a penalty? I think it needs a footballer in there as well to understand the situation. I don't know the rules, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask."

Everton did eventually grab a point when Cenk Tosun equalised in added time after 12 minutes were added on following a horror injury to Andre Gomes .
