Everton legend Andy Gray slams 'shocking decision' in Liverpool's latest dramatic victory

Everton legend Andy Gray has slammed the decision that led to Liverpool's match winning goal at St James' Park on Saturday.

And the Goodison hero believes this is not the first time this season the Reds have benefited from "their fair share of good fortune in big games when they have needed it."

The Reds cashed in on a dramatic three points at Newcastle on Saturday after Toon defender Matt Ritchie was wrongly adjudged to have fouled Fabinho deep on the right-hand side of the field before Xherdan Shaqiri whipped in a fine free-kick for Divock Origi to head home the winning goal.

It proved to be a controversial award from Andre Marriner and after Fabinho's dive, Liverpool players were jeered as they went to applaud their fans at the end of the game.

Speaking on beIN SPORTS, Gray said: "It was a shocking decision.

"The officials sometimes say that they are TOO close to the action.

"Liverpool have had their fair share of good fortune in big games when they have needed it.

"That free-kick was another bit of good fortune.

"It was never a free-kick.

"The ball in from Shaqiri was right on the money and it had to be dealt with."

Gray's reaction to the winner went viral.

While Anfield legend John Barnes celebrated the goal enthusiastically, Gray remained motionless for more than 15 seconds.
