Everton join Arsenal in the race for Mikel Arteta after Pep Guardiola hint

Former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta is under serious consideration to fill the vacant manager’s position at Everton.

The Blues are on the lookout for a new boss after sacking Marco Silva last week following eight defeats in 11 Premier League games.

Silva’s final game in charge saw Everton beaten 5-2 by Liverpool at Anfield, with the Portuguese sacked the next day.

And now, according to the Liverpool ECHO, Arteta is among the names being talked about at boardroom level by the club’s hierarchy.

The Spaniard became an Everton fan favourite during six-and-a-half-years of playing at Goodison Park before leaving Merseyside for the Gunners.

Arteta has also been linked with the vacant manager's position at the Emirates following Unai Emery’s sacking at the end of November.

The former playmaker is currently serving as assistant manager to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, and when asked today about the speculation about his number two, Guardiola said only Arteta can decide if he is ready to make the step up to management.

"You can be a 45-year-old and believe you’re not ready [to become a manager] and 35 and believe you’re ready," the City manager told the assembled press.

"Only he knows. I’ve spoken about the situation a few weeks ago, there’s no more to add. I said two weeks ago, he’s got two weeks more experience, so he’s ready."
