Everton injury scare confirmed by Carlo Ancelotti ahead of Tottenham FA Cup clash

Everton could be without playmaker James Rodriguez for the midweek FA Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 29-year-old was on the scoresheet in a six-goal thriller away at Manchester United at the weekend as the Toffees left Old Trafford with a point after being 2-0 down at half-time.

Rodriguez's goal made it 2-2 shortly after the restart, but the attacking midfielder didn't see out the remainder of the match as he was replaced by Gylfi Sigurdsson with just over 20 minutes of normal time remaining.

As he came off, there appeared to be a discussion with Everton boss Ancelotti - presumably about the injury.

Jose Mourinho provides update on Son Heung-Min's contract

And with the Spurs fifth round FA Cup clash on the horizon, the Italian tactician delivered an update regarding Rodriguez's fitness.

It has been confirmed that the Colombia international sustained a calf problem in the closing stages of the first-half against United and Ancelotti didn't want to risk aggravating it even further.

"He had a problem on his calf at the end of the first-half," Ancelotti said after the draw against United, as per the Echo.

"We tried for 10-15 minutes [of the second-half] but the calf was tight.

"I prefer to take him off."

Whether that means the former Real Madrid midfielder will be risked from the start against Spurs on Wednesday night remains to be seen.

But his potential absence would boost Jose Mourinho side's chances of reaching the FA Cup quarter-final.

Rodriguez actually made his Everton debut on the opening weekend of the Premier League season - a 1-0 win over the Lilywhites - where he was impressive throughout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Furthermore, he has been at his creative best in the FA Cup thus far with three assists in two appearances.
