Everton are looking to end a quiet summer in the transfer market by signing Xherdan Shaqiri from Internazionale plus the River Plate defender Ramiro Funes Mori.

Their manager, Roberto Martínez, has said his squad requires three additions before the end of the transfer window – a central defender, a No10 playmaker and a striker – having signed only Tom Cleverley and Gerard Deulofeu ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Switzerland international midfielder Shaqiri is available on loan from Internazionale, having failed to make an impact since joining Roberto Mancini’s side from Bayern Munich in January. The 23-year-old rejected a transfer to Stoke City after Mark Hughes’s side had agreed a £12m deal with their Italian counterparts earlier in the summer but Everton have opened talks over a season-long loan.

They are also attempting to close a deal for Mori, a 24-year-old defender who has impressed in River Plate’s recent revival and has won one cap for the Argentina national side. Martínez is in urgent need of central defensive cover, having released Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz at the end of last season.
