Everton hope new TV deal can help expansion in "very important" international market

Everton will hope a new television deal will help grow their profile in a "very important market".

The Premier League have announced an agreement that will see one game shown free-to-air in sub Saharan African each week.

Everton are hoping to expand their fan-base in East Africa on the back of the club's sponsorship deal with SportPesa and will play a pre-season friendly in Kenya in July.

The Blues played a warm-up game in Tanzania in 2017 and board member Sasha Ryazantsev says that part of the continent is a target market for the club.

And Everton will now hope they are selected for as many of the free-to-air games as possible to increase their exposure in East Africa.

The deal starts in the upcoming season and lasts three years.

"For fans in over 40 countries across the region, this agreement will allow one free-to-air match to be broadcast live every Saturday, as well as weekly preview, magazine and highlights programmes," Paul Molnar, the Premier League's Director of Broadcasting said.

"These rights are important in ensuring the widest possible access to our competition for the many passionate Premier League fans across Africa."

Ryazantsev says that although Everton will continue to explore the more established international markets, a move into Africa is an "opportunity" for the club.

Earlier this season he said: "I personally believe in Africa as a very important market that is hugely undervalued at the moment, with most Premier League teams looking mostly towards the North American and Asian markets to expand their fan base and grow revenue.

I’m not saying that we are not active there, too, but in Africa people’s interest in football (you are preaching to the converted there!) provides an opportunity that we would like to explore further and we very much hope we can do more than just the one partner in the region."

Sports marketing company Infront will deliver on the new Premier League agreement and Stephan Herth, Infront's senior vice-president of football, said: "The fact that every African Footballer of the Year since 2015 is currently playing in the Premier League highlights the appeal it has on the continent and we are looking forward to delivering exciting action to fans across the region."
