Everton hit with Liverpool sucker punch as late goal sees young Blues condemned to defeat

Everton were beaten by a late goal in the first mini-derby of the season against Liverpool on Saturday.

The young Blues had gone behind at the Reds' Academy in Kirkby but levelled before half-time through Dennis Adeniran.

David Unsworth's side pressed for a second goal on a rain-soaked afternoon but would leave the game empty handed when Herbie Kane struck from outside the area in the closing stages.

The win for Liverpool sees them move level on points with Everton's under-23s in the Premier League 2 table.

Harry Charsley would waste Everton's best chance in the second-half when he headed Matty Foulds' corner over the bar before seeing a second header ruled out for offside.

And they would come to rue the miss when Kane found the top corner late on to put the Reds back in front.

The Blues under-23s were punished for a sluggish start when Liverpool took a 17th minute lead when Tony Gallacher's deflected drive from outside the box skipped past Harry Tyrer.

Everton, however, gradually began to take control of the game and the excellent Adeniran equalised when collecting a quick free-kick from Morgan Feeney, taking it past James Norris and firing past Ben Winterbottom in the Reds' goal.

Unsworth's side were looking the more likely to go in front but were hit with a late sucker punch from Kane to condemn them mini-derby defeat.
