Everton hero Leighton Baines announces retirement from football

Leighton Baines has announced his retirement from football, Everton have confirmed.

The 35-year-old was offered a new one-year deal by the Blues but has turned the offer down.

Baines made 420 appearances for Everton and the club were hoping he would agree to a 12 month extension.

But the left-back, who played for the final 20 minutes in today's final game of the season against Bournemouth, has decided to hang up his boots.

Everton will try and keep Baines at the club and offer him a non-playing role, possibly a coaching position.

He arrived at Everton from Wigan in 2007 and has provided the Goodison Park faithful with so many incredible memories from his time on the pitch.

For all the latest news about Baines as it develops across Sunday evening, including reaction from manager Carlo Ancelotti, follow our live blog here.
