Everton have turned around Goodison Park atmosphere - but what still needs to improve

Former Everton manager David Moyes believes the club's improved atmosphere still has some way to go to match the Blues' best.

Over the course of the last few years, the feeling at Goodison Park steadily declined as performances on the pitch got worse and worse under the management of Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce.

However, towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign, there was a notable upturn in atmosphere at Goodison - and that translated insto strong results against Chelsea, Aresnal and Manchester United at home.

However, Moyes still thinks things could be better.

Speaking to The Alan Myers Everton Podcast, the former Blues manager mentioned his result against Manchester United in 2005 and the match against Bayern Munich in 1984 as peak Everton atmospheres - and the current crop still have some way to go to match that level.

He said: "I was watching the games midway through the season and I was thinking, 'This is nothing like the Goodison I know, or the supporters I know'.

"I thought they were sitting on their hands, and I'd seen them jumping around when they had something to be proud of.

"I think, towards the end of the season, the supporters were all happier because Everton got some good results. But those days that I've mentioned, I think there's some way to go to get back to that.

"My days could never touch Andy Gray's days. But I think Everton are still looking for some of those really great nights which will stick will supporters.

"Beating Man United 4-0 will be the closest they have come."

Moyes has always been very clear on what he thinks makes a strong Everton manager, and his view on that hasn't changed.

"If you continually change your manager, you struggle to have that identity," Moyes added.

"The supporters demand, you're expected to be committed, your energy levels have to be high, desire - all the words that are easy to say, but if you don't have that at the start you're best not being there."
