Everton’s Jordan Pickford paid tribute to Liverpool legend Ray Clemence by placing an England goalkeeper’s shirt with the late Reds star’s name on it by the side of the pitch at Wembley on Wednesday night ahead of their UEFA Nations League fixture with Iceland.
Clemence, who died on Sunday aged 72, won five League Championships, an FA Cup, a League Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups and a European Super Cup with Liverpool is widely-regarded as being the Reds best-ever goalkeeper and also played 61 times for the Three Lions despite playing in the same era as England’s most-capped goalkeeper Peter Shilton.
Pickford joined his fellow keepers in the current England squad, Nick Pope and Dean Henderson plus national team goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson – who also worked with him at Everton during Sam Allardyce’s tenure in charge – in being photographed with the jersey emblazoned with ‘Clemence number one’ on it before the garment was respectfully placed behind the net where it remained during the game.
England won the game 4-0 enabling Pickford to poignantly mark the occasion by keeping a clean sheet which would have surely met with Clemence’s approval.
