Everton fined again as club hit with five-figure penalty over Leeds 'confrontation'

Everton have been fined £55,000 for their players’ roles in a “mass confrontation” during the game with Leeds United.

Almost every player on the pitch was involved when trouble broke out during the game last month, which the Blues went on to win 1-0. The chaos started between Dwight McNeil and Tyler Adams and went on to lead to a brawl after which four players received yellow cards.

It is Everton’s third fine for such matters this season, following penalties after trouble in the home game with Crystal Palace and the Anfield Merseyside derby.

The incident in the Leeds match began when McNeil fouled Adams in front of the away fans. Adams then reacted to the challenge with the Leeds man appearing to push the Everton winger to the ground as things quickly escalated off the pitch.

The Football Association later confirmed it had launched a probe into the trouble and charged both clubs with failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and failing to ensure their players did not behave in an improper and provocative manner. Both sides admitted the allegations.

Everton were fined £55,000 and Leeds were handed a £35,000 punishment. For Everton, the penalty followed the £40,000 fine received by the club for the trouble in the derby and the £20,000 fine in relation to events during the Palace match, with punishments becoming more severe as offences are repeated.
