Everton fans warned matchday car park is shutting this weekend

A popular Liverpool and Everton matchday car park will be closed this weekend as the Blues host Manchester United.

Liverpool City council said the car park on Walton Breck Road would not be in operation because the contractor operating the site gave notice "with immediate effect."

While LFC are set to take on Cardiff City away, fans heading to Goodison Park on Sunday may face disruption as they struggle to find alternative parking in the already congested area.

Apologising for the sudden closure, a statement on the city council's Twitter account said:  "We're sorry to inform you that the Walton Breck Road match day car park won't be operating this weekend.

"The appointed contractor has given notice with immediate effect due to difficulties operating the site. We're reviewing all options and will keep everyone informed."

The council are yet to confirm when the car park, used by fans on match days,  will re-open.

Last month the ECHO revealed that the site would soon have a new operator as a tendering process draws to a close.

The car park,  on the site of the former Notre Dame College off Walton Breck Road, has been subject to an ongoing financial investigation by the city council.

In November it was revealed that the authority was investigating allegations about the operation of the car park - which is run by a community interest company linked to several serving Labour councillors.

The authority said at the time that its internal audit team were investigating the situation regarding the car park  - one of two that is managed by the Beautiful Ideas Community Interest Company (BiCo).

There was no suggestion that any of the councillors have done anything wrong regarding the running of the car parks, but Liverpool Council has been investigating 'issues raised' about where the money paid by match-going fans has gone.

A spokesperson said the investigation will be coming to a close in the near future.
