Everton fans' most popular away kit of the Premier League era revealed

Everton fans have spoken and delivered their verdict on the club's best away kit of the Premier League era.

Ahead of the 2019/20 away kit being revealed today - and worn tonight for the first time at Wigan Athletic - on  Tuesday the ECHO launched an online poll with images of all 24 different change strips worn by the Blues since the 1992/93 season to the present day and supporters have been having their say in great numbers.

At the time of publication, almost 40,000 votes had been cast in total with readers rating each of the strips on a one to 10 basis.

There were a variety of hues to consider from more traditional Everton away colours of white and amber to various shades of pink and all-black with the club starting with and reverting to Umbro after forays with Puma, Le Coq Sportif and Nike but who will come out on top in the final reckoning?

Let's find out as we reveal (in reverse order), Evertonians' ranking of their favourite Premier League away kits.

1999-2000 4.94 (average score out of 10)

In today's fitted kit era, this flapping great sheet of a shirt has not aged well - even the muscular physique of 'Super' Kevin Campbell failed to fill it out.

2000-01 5.52

Perhaps it's a shock that this hommage to the classic amber and blue of the 1960s didn't score higher but it's not too-dissimilar to the previous kit it keeps off rock bottom.

2001-02 5.81

A grey day rather than a silver lining for this kit. Is this a backlash on fashions at the turn of the Millennium or just memories of the Walter Smith era?

2002-03 5.84

Perhaps it is just a dislike of those turn of the century fashions as this seemingly inoffensive number bombs but any jersey would look baggy on the slender Davy Weir.

2010-11 5.93

Evertonians have embraced the salmon pink and even the hot neon pink but it seems even Mikel Arteta didn't look so pretty in this bold shade.

2003-04 6.08

Another amber and blue throwback that failed to inspire. Many older Evertonians reckon such colours should be the club's away kit. Maybe they just prefer the original or such traditions are lost on younger fans?

1994-96 6.22

The busy design on this shirt was typical of the early to mid 1990s but even then was derided by some as resembling a 'tyre track.' A version of this kit was worn by Everton for their victory over Blackburn Rovers in the 1995 Charity Shield.

1998-99 6.39

Even World Cup-winner Marco Materazzi can't get what now seems like a great waste of material to strike gold here.

2005-06 6.43

Blues don't mind it when Skies are grey but it seems again they'd prefer it if their shirts were not.

2017-18 6.45

If anyone with any impact at the club on these things is reading, take note about these grey kits. In the bin seems to be the verdict from the fans.

1996-98 6.50

A colourful combination complete with a lesser-spotted central badge but did it make Duncan Ferguson resemble an angry wasp?

1992-94 6.57

Evertonians didn't know what to expect at the time when they heard they were getting a pink kit to celebrate Goodison Park's centenary but this became an iconic number and it's perhaps surprising it didn't score higher.

2011-12 6.60

The highest-ranking of the amber round neck 1960s revival attempts.

2004-05 6.62

A simple white number with blue trim associated with a surprisingly successful season and worn in its all-white version for the memorable comeback victory at Crystal Palace in August that helped set the tone for the campaign.

2009-10 6.63

The most vivid shade of pink used to date but restricted to a more subtle horizontal pinstripe within a predominantly black kit seems to have been a popular combination.

2006-07 6.64

An understated white shirt with navy shorts ensemble with a hint of sky blue trim proved easy on the eye.

2007-08 6.65

Only minimal difference really for this kit and the one from the previous season (above) which is reflected in the wafer-thin difference in their respective marks.

2008-09 6.68

A third white shirt in a row but the detail of having the two-tone horizontal trim across the chest seems to have given this kit the edge in its category with fans.

2013-14 6.85

Even Everton's much-maligned, short-lived 'toy town' crest couldn't spoil this bold yellow and blue number although it seems to bare a striking resemblance to a rugby league kit that might be worn by Warrington Wolves or Leeds Rhinos.

2015-16 6.87

Perhaps the grey stripes reminded Evertonians of a certain vintage of a popular but lesser-spotted third kit from just before the Premier League era but this proved to be the highest-ranking of all the white shirts.

2014-15 7.22

2014-15 away kit (Stu Forster/Getty Images)

A big jump in scores here to the first of the kits to average over 7 out of 10. This all-black number proved a big hit.

2016-17 7.29

2016-17 away kit (Jan Kruger/Getty Images)

Another predominantly dark kit, although it appears black at first glance it was actually really dark navy and had salmon pink trim.

2018-19 7.34

Recent kits always seem to do well in such polls as they're both up-to-date fashion-wise and fresh in people's minds and last season's change strip was no different although it has to make do with runners-up spot.

2012/13 7.68

2012-13 away kit (Jan Kruger/Getty Images)

A clear winner with our readers as the only kit to gain an average score of over seven-and-a-half. It's Nike and it's all-black - the top four on this list have all been predominantly dark.

It seems that Evertonians are all for a return to the 'Black Watch' (one of the club's early kits in the Victorian era when they dyed all their multi-coloured jerseys black) on Blues away days although the addition of the old scarlet sash might prove unpalatable for their 21st century fans.
