An Everton fan who has been delivering supplies to Ukrainian refugees came off the bench to score in a pre-season friendly at Goodison Park.
Paul Stratton has been doing his upmost to help those who have fled their country amid the Russian invasion. He has been recognised by the club he supports, who allowed him to play a part in their final pre-season outing against Dynamo Kyiv.
He was bought on as a substitute and strolled on to take an Everton penalty, which he slotted home. The crowd cheered as the individual revelled in his moment, celebrating on his knees in front of the home fans in the Gwladys Street End.
Everton have been particularly affected by the invasion in Ukraine through Vitaliy Mykolenko. The 23-year-old joined the Toffees from Dynamo Kyiv in January of this year, shortly before his country was attacked by Russian soldiers.
He has been vocal in standing up for his country, calling out Russian player Artem Dzyuba, who he has accused of remaining silent throughout his country's horrific actions.
Frank Lampard's side officially won 3-0 with Stratton's unofficial strike making it a win by four goals. Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened the scoring before new signing Dwight McNeil grabbed himself a brace as he introduced himself to the crowd in the best possible way.
The winger made the switch from Burnley this week and will be looking to bolster Everton's push up the table after a poor campaign that had them fending off relegation in the final weeks. Lampard will welcome former club Chelsea on the opening weekend of the season.
McNeil said upon joining the club : “Last season was difficult for the Club, but going into the last bit of the season, you saw from the players and fans the desire, mentality and togetherness they have,” added McNeil.
“They came together and were united as one. That is massive for players and gives you that extra bit of confidence. This season we want to do better and I want to be part of the team to help them do that.
“I’ve played at Goodison a couple of times and you always knew it was always a difficult place to go because the fans are behind the lads from the start to the end. It is good and something I want to be part of. Now I am fortunate to be on the same side as the fans and am looking forward to getting going.”
