An Everton fan who allegedly made a racist gesture towards a Tottenham player "did not commit a crime", say police.
The incident happened after Spurs forward Son Heung-Min fouled Blues midfielder Andre Gomes during the match at Goodison Park , leaving him with a suspected broken ankle.
Andre Gomes was tripped by Son and as he lost his footing the Everton player's ankle dislocated.
Son appeared to be distraught at seeing the damage sustained to Gomes and was initially given a yellow card, but this was soon upgraded to a red and he was sent off.
Spurs have announced they will appeal the decision.
The supporter in question was caught on camera making an alleged racist gesture towards the South Korean player after the incident, which saw Son sent off in tears.
Shortly after the game, an investigation into the alleged racist act was launched by Everton before being handed to Merseyside Police to look into.
A force spokesperson has now confirmed that officers investigated the incident, which happened on Sunday evening, and do not believe that a crime has been comitted.
Despite the decision made by police, Everton Football Club want to remind supporters that that racism does not have place within the community.
Shortly after the incident, Everton Fan Services tweeted to say they would be investigating the incident and to condemn racism in any form.
They said: "Everton is investigating an alleged incident of racist behaviour by a supporter attending today’s fixture against Tottenham.
"Everton strongly condemns any form of racism.
"Any such behaviour has no place within our stadium, our Club, our community or our game."
