Here are the Everton evening headlines for Thursday, October 1.
Calvert-Lewin ‘very proud’ after first England call-up
Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin says he is a “very, very proud man” after earning his first senior England call-up .
The 23-year-old striker has made Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming games against Wales and Belgium.
And Calvert-Lewin, who has started the season for Everton in prolific form, has revealed how he reacted to the news.
“I’m a very, very proud man to get this first England call,” he told Everton’s official website . “I just phoned my mum and my dad, and my mum burst into tears.
"It’s something we’ve spoken about since I was a young boy. To get here now and get the call-up is a dream come true. I’m very happy.
“I found out with a text message [from the FA].
“Pickers and Keano were obviously named in the squad and they were saying, ‘Have you got the text yet?’.
“I went to my phone and saw the text message… I didn’t really know how to feel if I’m being honest. I’ve thought about this moment so many times.
“To finally get that recognition of a senior England call-up, it’s something I’ve worked very hard for.
“I’m very thankful to my manager at Everton and my teammates for helping me get here.”
Ancelotti explains Kean absence against West Ham
Carlo Ancelotti has explained why Moise Kean was not part of the Everton squad for Wednesday night’s 4-1 Carabao Cup win over West Ham.
The 20-year-old, who has been linked with a return to Juventus this summer, played and scored in the previous rounds against Salford City and Fleetwood Town.
But Ancelotti suggested his absence at Goodison Park last night was due to illness.
“He had no injury, but was not available, he didn't feel good,” the manager said at his post-match press conference .
“I think in the next day he can recover without a problem.”
Donovan-coached side forfeit game after alleged homophobic slur
Players of San Diego Loyal SC, the USL Championship side managed by ex-Everton loanee Landon Donovan, forfeited a game against Phoenix Rising on Wednesday after an alleged homophobic slur .
The former Blues forward insisted his team “would not stand for bigotry” following the incident.
Loyal were 3-1 up at half-time but left the pitch immediately after the whistle was blown to start the second half.
The incident came only a few days after Donovan’s side announced they were forfeiting a match against LA Galaxy II – which ended 1-1 – after a racial slur was aimed at midfielder Elijah Martin by Omar Ontiveros, who has since mutally agreed to leave the Galaxy.
