Here are your Everton evening headlines for Sunday, September 20.
Calvert-Lewin compared to Italy legend Inzaghi
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his first hat-trick for Everton in Saturday’s victory over West Bromwich Albion.
The striker already has four goals to his name this season and is continuing the excellent form he discovered after the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti last term.
And the Everton boss commented on Calvert-Lewin’s goalscoring knack after the win at Goodison Park, likening him to legendary Italian centre-forward Filippo Inzaghi. .
“I had a fantastic striker in Inzaghi, who scored 300 goals, 210 with one touch,” said the Italian .
“A striker has to be focused in the box and I think Calvert-Lewin understands that really well because in the box he has speed, he jumps really high, he has power.
"Where he has improved more is there, in the box.”
Pundits heap praise on Toffees trio
An excellent attacking performance underpinned Everton's win against West Brom. And their forward players were heavily praised by Match of the Day pundits, Jermaine Jenas and Danny Murphy.
Jenas highlighted the role of Calvert-Lewin, who has scored four goals in Everton's opening two Premier League games.
“What I love about his performance today was his maturity,” Jenas said. “When you’re young, you can be over-enthusiastic, run all over the place and not in the right place when the ball does get delivered.
“Today, the discipline he has to stay central, he doesn’t come out the width of the six-yard box and that’s where top strikers get their goals.”
Murphy, meanwhile, highlighted the role of Richarlison and the impact of new signing James Rodriguez.
“They give Everton such a great balance,” Murphy said. “I thought Richarlison was the man who dragged Everton back into the game after West Brom started well. I love his running off the ball, when you played against a packed defence, running in-behind is so important.
“The quality he (Rodriguez) gives Everton, fantastic passes and finding those little holes. Richarlison commits people, he takes responsibility. James is the bit of quality Everton were missing last season, he starts on the right but gets into those dangerous positions.
“It’s not just picking the pass but having the courage to try to make things happen. The only disappointment was that Everton fans weren’t there to witness his quality.”
How the national press reacted to Everton win
Everton excelled on the pitch in their 5-2 victory over West Brom. And the national media responded in turn, heaping praise on Ancelotti and his players.
Paul Joyce of the Times highlighted James' inventiveness. “Amid the flurry of goals and red cards, it was James Rodríguez, unsurprisingly, who conjured a moment of sumptuous ingenuity to bring some order to the chaos.”
Similarly, Andy Hunter of the Guardian hailed the Colombian's “genuine class” as he recounted the Blues’ second win of the top-flight campaign.
“James scored his first goal in English football since his move from Real Madrid and illuminated the afternoon with touches of genuine class,” Hunter wrote.
“He was also involved in the moment that turned everything when, seconds after sweeping Everton ahead, he collapsed to the ground after taking a shove in the face from Kieran Gibbs.”
