Everton director Marcel Brands casts doubt over Premier League football returning in April

Everton director of football Marcel Brands has cast doubt over Premier League football returning in time for his side's match against Leicester City on April 6.

Fixtures across the Premier League and the EFL have been suspended until the start of April but the expectation is that an extension is on the cards, with experts warning the worst of the coronavirus outbreak is yet to come.

A host of European leagues have also been suspended, while the FA confirmed on Friday that all upcoming FA Cup games have been postponed until further notice.

Premier League clubs are scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss their next move and how to deal with the ongoing outbreak.

Bruce: Playing games behind closed doors not the answer

And Brands, speaking to FC Update - via SportWitness - believes there isn’t much of a chance of Premier League clubs returning to action in a couple of weeks.

"Whether the league will be finished will affect TV funding. It will depend on what's going to happen to Europe and Champions League,” he said.

"But I wonder if we can play football on April 6th. I don’t think that chance is that big.

Everton confirmed on Friday that a member of their first team squad was self-isolating after displaying symptoms of coronavirus.

But Brands has now confirmed that the player in question did not have coronavirus.

"[Last] Friday morning someone had a fever among us, but fortunately it turns out that there was no infection” he said. “But we took no risk and decided to close the complex ourselves."
