Everton described as 'power for good in community' as council sends Bramley-Moore dock message to government

The chair of Everton's Bramley-Moore Dock planning committee meeting hopes that the unanimous nature of their decision is taken into account by the Secretary of State when he rules on the Blues' proposed new stadium.

The Blues' detailed planning application for a new waterfront stadium was approved by a unanimous decision on Tuesday morning as the collection of 11 councillors all shared their praise for the project.

The club's plans for a community-led legacy project at Goodison Park also passed its vote with a similar certainty.

The application will now be referred to Secretary of State Robert Jenrick, a matter of procedure for a project this size.

That office will then have an initial 21-day period to decide whether the proposals should be called in for a higher level of Government scrutiny.

However, chair of Tuesday's council meeting Tricia O'Brien hopes that their unanimous decision will be taken into consideration, before calling Everton a "power for good in our community".

In her closing comments, the councillor remarked: "I would like to thank everybody for all their time and patience today.

"It's been an extremely long report even just to read, but I can see that everybody's given it all the care and notice that it needed for an historic, unanimous, fully-attended planning committee decision.

"I hope all that is going to be taken into account when this matter is going to be passed to the Secretary of State, who may or may not decide to call it in.

"But I think the very expansive debate, the really excellent groundwork that's been done both by our own planning officers who I'd really like to praise and by Everton Football Club - who I think have really demonstrated that they are a power for good in our community - is all going to be taken into account.

"Because now we have made the decision, I always like to see planning developments that the planning committee have agreed go ahead as soon as practically possible.

"Thank you everybody for an excellent meeting all-round."
