Everton defender Yerry Mina's Colombia absence ahead of Merseyside derby explained

The Colombia national team have confirmed why Yerry Mina missed his side's latest match ahead of the Merseyside derby this weekend.

The Everton star and teammate James Rodriguez were both called up by their country for their World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Chile.

Colombia faced the latter of those opponents in the early hours of Wednesday morning, UK time, and secured a 2-2 draw thanks to a Radamel Falcao strike in stoppage time.

However, while Rodriguez played the full 90 minutes for his country, Mina was absent from the line-up after feeling some discomfort in his thigh.

The official Twitter account of the defender's national team sent out a tweet before kick off confirming that the defender had been left out as a precaution, so as to not aggravate a previous injury.

The tweet roughly translates as: "Yerry Mina during the last training session, presented discomfort in her right thigh.

"So he was removed from said practice and as a preventive measure he will not be in the game to avoid a relapse in his previous injury."

Mina has played in every Premier League match so far this season for Everton, helping Carlo Ancelotti's side to the four wins which have seen them top the table over the international break.
