Everton defender Matthew Pennington completes loan move

Everton defender Matthew Pennington has joined Shrewsbury Town on loan until the end of the season.

Pennington, 26, joins the League One outfit for the remainder of the campaign before his Everton contract expires in the summer.

Plymouth Argyle were also interested in the centre-back but he decided to link up with Steve Cotterill at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Shrewsbury are 16th in the table but are unbeaten in League One under Cotterill since he was appointed at the end of November.

Take our 30-second Everton transfer survey and let us know what Carlo Ancelotti needs to do in the January window.

An academy graduate, Pennington has made nine appearances for the first-team at Everton and spent time on loan with Tranmere Rovers, Coventry City, Walsall, Leeds United, Ipswich Town and Hull City.

He played nine times for the under-23s at the beginning of this season and captained them last time out against Brighton and Hove Albion.
