Everton could let two young stars leave on loan in January transfer window

David Unsworth is open to potentially losing two key defenders on loan in the January transfer window.

Both Lewis Gibson and Morgan Feeney have been vital for Everton U23s recently, providing a solid partnership in the centre of defence.

They played crucial roles as the young Blues lifted both the Premier League 2 title and the Premier League Cup by the end of the 2018/19 term, and have carried on their good form into this season.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, and with both youngsters coming to the end of their current contracts with the club in 2020, a potential to go out on loan for first team football is possible.

Gibson was heavily involved with Marco Silva's first team plans throughout pre-season and is thought of as the club's fourth choice centre-back at the minute behind the three senior options of Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate.

Feeney, meanwhile, made his senior debut for Everton back in 2017 - coming on as a substitute against Atalanta in the Europa League.

Unsworth admitted the decision to let them leave temporarily or stay would not be down to him, but would highly recommend the defenders to any club willing to give him a call.

He told the ECHO: "I have to say they have both been fantastic for me. They are both great players at this level and both leaders.

"They are both terrific lads and I have all the time in the world for them.

"Whatever happens in January with both of them, I don't know. That's up to Marco and Marcel.

"That's not my decision. That would be Marcel's decision. But if any manager phones me they'll only hear good things."

Key members of Unsworth's double-winning side from last season are already out on loan including Nathan Broadhead, Joao Virginia, Josh Bowler and Fraser Hornby.
