Everton could go month without match as West Ham game in doubt

Everton's home game with West Ham United is in doubt.

The club's trip to Arsenal has already been postponed, the Premier League confirming on Friday that this weekend's fixtures will not go ahead as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Officials said updates will be released in "due course" about further matches set to take place during the period of mourning. This includes Everton's match with West Ham at Goodison Park on Sunday, September 18 (2pm kick-off)

Official guidance released by the government following the death of the Queen stated sports events could go ahead and that any decision was in the hands of the organising bodies. Following a Premier League meeting on Friday morning it was confirmed this weekend's set of fixtures would be postponed, however.

The decision was made, the organisation said, in order "to honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect".

Richard Masters, chief executive of the Premier League, said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country. As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication. This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

What remains unclear is whether the next set of Premier League fixtures - scheduled between September 16-18 - will go ahead. The Premier League said: "Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course." If the game is called off, the international break that follows means Everton will go almost a month between games - from the Merseyside derby on September 3 to the trip to Southampton on October 1.
