Everton considering shock Diego Costa transfer as they look for 'statement signing'

Everton could make a surprise bid to try to bring Spain striker Diego Costa back to the Premier League to bolster their front-line.

Costa, 30, is likely to leave Atletico Madrid this summer having reportedly fallen out with staff at the club.

Atletico were also left unimpressed when the fiery forward was banned for eight matches last season after abusing a referee, and are willing to listen to offers for the player, who scored just once in 14 La Liga appearances during the 2018-2019 campaign.

Everton have so far completed the signings of midfielder Andre Gomes and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl this summer, but their owner Farhad Moshi wants to bring in a big marquee name signing to help grow the marketability of the club.

He is also keen to see the Toffees strengthen up front, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun currently the only recognised strikers in the squad.

If Costa can perform even half as effectively as he did during his time at Chelsea he would prove to be a great bit of business for Everton.

He scored 59 goals in 120 appearances for the London club, winning two Premier League titles and a League Cup at Stamford Bridge.

It remains to be seen if Everton can afford both the transfer fee demanded by Atletico and Costa's wages, or if Costa himself fancies the move.

Moshi, however, is an ambitious man, and is desperate for the club to move forward and challenge for European places next season.

They finished eighth in Marco Silva's first campaign, just missing out on a Europa League qualifying spot with Wolves finishing three points above them.

They spent big money last summer on the signings of Richarlison, Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne, and are expected to do so again by the time the transfer window shuts on August 8.
