Everton confirm Maarten Stekelenburg contract extension before transfer to Ajax

Everton have confirmed Maarten Stekelenburg has signed a short-term contract extension with the club until the end of the season.

The goalkeeper will then leave Goodison Park in July to join Ajax on a permanent basis.

The 37-year-old, who made the move to Merseyside in the summer of 2016, will stay with Carlo Ancelotti's setup to cover the remaining matches of the 2019/20 campaign, acting as back-up to Jordan Pickford alongside Joao Virginia.

Following Everton's last game of the season against Bournemouth, the shot stopper will return to Ajax where he previously spent nine years of his professional career.

Stekelenburg has made 26 first team appearances for the Blues in his time with the club after his transfer from Fulham.

Premier League sides have until Tuesday to agree extensions with players who are due to come to the ends of their contracts on June 30.

Cuco Martina and Oumar Niasse are two stars in this position, with a decision still to be made on their short-term futures at the club.

Leighton Baines, meanwhile, has already been offered a new deal with Everton.
