Everton can sign next Wayne Rooney and son of icon to save millions on transfers this summer

Everton have a successful relationship with Football League recruitment.

Joleon Lescott and Phil Jagielka were both signed from the Championship as well as modern icon Tim Cahill.

Cahill would go on to score more than 50 goals in the Premier League for Everton while the trio made over 800 appearances combined - costing less than £10m overall - during their time at Goodison Park.

But who could Everton turn to for their next Football League bargain?

The ECHO ran the rule over five names with help from regional football experts.

Name: Amari Miller

Position: Left-Wing

Age: 18

Club: Birmingham City

Level: Championship

Who? Everton reportedly 'set their sights' on Miller in April and he went on to make five Championship appearances - twice from the start - this term.

Birmingham City manager Lee Bowyer admitted 'he has potential' but the club could lose out as they overhaul their youth set-up.

Miller scored for City in a pre-season win last summer and revealed his ambitions after a recent first-team showing.

He said: "To say ‘I can go and say I have played for Birmingham City first team’ is a great achievement.

“And I want more, I don’t want to settle, I want to try and produce something.”

Name: Arnaut Danjuma

Position: Winger

Age:

Club: Bournemouth

Level: Championship

Who? Everton are also said to be interested in Bournemouth winger Danjuma.

Marcel Brands has been credited with keeping tabs on the 24-year-old alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion and Southampton.

Danjuma played in the Premier League for Bournemouth when they were relegated in 2020 but scored 17 goals and made seven assists in the Championship this term.

With his current club failing in the play-offs he is sure to attract suitors.

Name: Tyrese Campbell

Position: Striker

Age: 21

Club: Stoke City

Level: Championship

Who? The son of Everton icon Kevin Campbell!

Pete Smith from Stoke Live said: "Campbell found his best form in a kind-of Mohamed Salah inside-right role where he can show skill, acceleration and instinctive finishing.

"He is recovering from knee injury which has ruled him out since December."

Before being injured Campbell had scored seven goals in 18 appearances in all competitions.

He was linked with a £10m switch to Bournemouth last year.

Name: Jason Knight

Position: Midfielder

Age: 20

Club: Derby County

Level: Championship

Who? The next Wayne Rooney! According to who? Wayne Rooney!

Rooney - now in charge of Derby County - made a then-19-year-old Knight his captain after taking over this season because of similarities in their dispositions.

The midfielder has broken into the Republic of Ireland set-up and had further praise lavished on him by the former Everton striker.

Rooney said: "He's a manager's dream. He gives everything."

Burnley have reportedly registered interest in Knight since his breakthrough.

Name: Matheus Pereira

Position: Attacking Midfielder

Age: 25

Club: West Bromwich Albion

Who? The most high-profile - and likely expensive - name on the list.

Birmingham Live writer Joe Chapman said: "11 goals and six assists during his first season in the Premier League means Albion haven't really a hope of holding onto him."

Chapman conceded Pereira would command a fee of more than £30m and there already seems to be a scramble for his signature.

Leeds United, Aston Villa and West Ham United have all been linked since his relegation was confirmed with West Bromwich Albion.

Name: Keane Lewis-Potter

Position: Winger

Age: 20

Club: Hull City

Who? Keane Lewis-Potter scored 13 goals and made six assists for League One champions Hull City last season and is one of the most exciting talents outside of the top two divisions.

Daily Mail reporter and Hull City fanatic Kathryn Batte said: "He can play anywhere across the front three and already has a handful of Championship appearances to his name.

"The 20-year-old is under contract with the Tigers until 2023, with the club holding the option for an extra year.

"Brentford are said to have shown an interest before he signed a new deal in January."
