Everton appear to make EFL Trophy decision despite recent progress

Everton look set not to enter their under-23 side into the EFL Trophy next season.

The EFL today released the confirmed list of category one academy invited clubs who would enter a team into the tournament for the new campaign.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United all feature but Everton - who have entered the competition since 2016 - will not take part after reaching the knockout stages for the first time last season.

The ECHO has approached the club for comment as to why the decision was made with Unsworth admitting progression in the EFL Trophy last season was 'great' for his prospects.

"To be unbeaten against three Football League sides, to win one and draw two, that makes me very proud," he previously told the ECHO.

"To get through to the latter stages is great for the players. We haven't managed to do it in the last couple of years, so that's been a bit of a disappointment."
