Everton and Liverpool players urged to get Covid jabs as Premier League supports stadium passports

Everton and Liverpool have both been encouraged by the Premier League to get their squads and back room staff vaccinated.

The move comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned venues with large crowds that they must make full vaccination a requirement of entry from the end of September.

More than 46 million people have been given a jab since the UK's Covid vaccine rollout began in December 2020.

While every adult in the UK has now been offered a vaccine, with the Prime Minister recently hailing the move an "extraordinary achievement".

The Prime Minister also recently urged anyone who had not booked their vaccine to do so and thanked those who had taken up their offer.

And now the ECHO understands that the Premier League has been doing its part and urged its clubs to urge their staff to get their jabs due to the difference it makes.

The move comes as a result of the governing body being committed to working with the government to support vaccination drives across the country.

Anfield is just one Premier League ground that has been used as a vaccination centre in recent months for the people of Merseyside to get their jabs

While Brentford, Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham United have all been working with local NHS trusts to help people in their communities by offering their facilities, as well as staff.

The Government announced earlier this week that fans could require a Covid passport showing their vaccination status to attend matches.

And the ECHO understands that the Premier League are supportive of Covid passes as they see it as the best possible way to ensure full capacity at grounds this season.

As recently as April, the Premier League wrote a letter to various bodies stating the benefits of Covid passports.

It read: "All sports can see the benefit that a Covid certification process offers in getting more fans safely back to their sport as quickly as possible.

“We know that our stadia can only be fully filled with an assurance process. This process must ensure that everyone can access stadia and must include arrangements that would verify a negative Covid test or an antibody test or vaccination certification."

Everton kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Southampton on Saturday, August 14, while Liverpool’s first game at Anfield sees them take on Burnley a week later.
