Everton and Liverpool learn who will referee upcoming Merseyside derby

Chris Kavanagh has been chosen to officiate the 238th Merseyside derby as Liverpool prepare to host Everton on Saturday.

The two sides currently sit sixth and seventh in the Premier League table and will both be looking to claim local bragging-rights and some vital points in the battle for Champions League qualification next season.

Saturday's game at Anfield will mark the second Merseyside derby Kavanagh has taken charge of, having also been the man in the middle for when Jurgen Klopp 's side ran out 1-0 winners in December 2018 thanks to Divock Origi's infamous last-minute winner.

Kavanagh has run the rule over 22 matches so far this season, including Everton 's home defeat to Leeds and Liverpool 's home victory over Leicester back in November, and has handed out 89 yellow cards and one red card.

He will be assisted by Dan Cook and Sian Massey-Ellis, with Paul Tierney chosen as the fourth official.

Meanwhile, Andre Marriner will be the VAR, assisted by Simon Long, back at Stockley Park.
