Everton and Liverpool fans could need to be fully vaccinated to go to Premier League matches

Only fully vaccinated Everton and Liverpool supporters could be allowed inside stadiums to watch matches from October under government plans.

It is believed that talks are underway with the Premier League to discuss whether supporters who have not received both jabs could be barred from entry.

The ECHO reported on Friday that both clubs have been encouraged by the Premier League to get their squads and backroom staff vaccinated.

That move came after Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned venues with large crowds that they must make full vaccination a requirement of entry from the end of September.

And it is now being claimed that large events such as Premier League games could only be open only to fully vaccinated people from October.

The rule could also be used for lower divisions and other sports, and for seated events with a capacity of more than 20,000 people, while for unseated events, such as concerts, the threshold could be as low as 5,000 attendees.

A government source told PA: "It's important that fans can continue to watch sporting events over the autumn, which is why we're exploring the role vaccines might play in this.

"This will not only allow full capacity stadiums but has the added bonus of incentivising people of all ages to go and get their jab."

While Shadow sports secretary Jo Stevens added on the plans: "To insist on vaccine passports less than a month before the start of the season will cause major disruptions, especially for clubs at the lower end of the pyramid.

"Labour has been clear that the use of COVID vaccination status alone will exclude those who can't be vaccinated or haven't had the jab because of delays.

"Being double jabbed doesn't prove you aren't carrying the virus. Testing for access to venues would be more efficient."

More than 46 million people have been given a jab since the UK's Covid vaccine rollout began in December 2020.

And the ECHO understands that the Premier League are supportive of Covid passes as they see it as the best possible way to ensure full capacity at grounds this season.

As recently as April, the Premier League wrote a letter to various bodies stating the benefits of Covid passports

It read: "All sports can see the benefit that a Covid certification process offers in getting more fans safely back to their sport as quickly as possible.

“We know that our stadia can only be fully filled with an assurance process. This process must ensure that everyone can access stadia and must include arrangements that would verify a negative Covid test or an antibody test or vaccination certification."

Everton kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Southampton on Saturday, August 14, while Liverpool’s first game at Anfield sees them take on Burnley a week later.
