Everton and Carlo Ancelotti tributes after death of former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti sent a touching message following the death of former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier at 73 on Monday.

Houllier was in charge of Liverpool between 1998-2004 and lifted an FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup treble in 2001.

Ancelotti came up against Houllier while at Chelsea in 2011, with the Frenchman enjoying his last management role in England with Aston Villa.

The manager posted on social media: "Saddened by the loss of a great man and colleague. RIP Gérard."

Everton had earlier posted: "Our thoughts are with the family of former France, Liverpool, PSG and Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier, as well as those close to him on Merseyside. RIP Gerard."

Houllier also managed Lens, Paris St-Germain, the French national team and Lyon.

As part of his degree Houllier spent a year in Liverpool as an assistant at Alsop High School.
